Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades star cluster (the Seven Sisters). Its name translates to “little eyes” (mata riki) or “eyes of the god” (mata ariki), specifically referencing the tears of the wind god Tāwhirimātea. Its dawn appearance in midwinter signifies the beginning of the Māori New Year (Te Tau Hou Māori). [1, 2, 3, 4]
