The word microbiome, as we often use it in Whole Food Living, primarily refers to the human gut. Broadly, though, a microbiome is the community of all microorganisms—including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and archaea—that inhabit a particular environment, as well as the collective genetic material (genomes) those microbes contain. These microscopic ecosystems exist in the human body (such as the gut and skin), in animals, plants, and natural environments. [1, 2, 3]
