Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) is New Zealand’s founding document. It is an agreement made in 1840 between the British Crown and more than 500 Māori rangatira (chiefs). The main goals were to create a government, protect Māori land and rights, and build a peaceful nation. [1, 2, 3, 4]
