In the search to understand why some people age with remarkable resilience, scientists have often focused on SuperAgers — older adults whose memories remain unusually sharp. But a new line of research has turned attention toward another exceptional group: super movers, people in their 80s who walk significantly faster than their peers.
Their story, which emerged from a study published in the journal Neurology in July and further explored in a CNN article, looks like reshaping how we think about movement, cognition, and the everyday habits that sustain long-term wellbeing.
Super movers are defined as adults aged 80 and older whose walking speed is at least 1.5 standard deviations above the average for their age and sex. In practical terms, they are unusually fast walkers — the kind of older adults you notice striding down the street with surprising ease.
Researchers examined these individuals across three large ageing cohorts to understand how their physical performance relates to cognitive health. What they found was striking: super movers had about half the risk of developing cognitive impairment compared with typical walkers.
Their cognitive decline was slower, their memory trajectories more stable, and their hippocampal volume — the brain region essential for learning and memory — better preserved.
The human dimension
CNN’s coverage adds a human dimension to these findings. Faster walkers in their 80s were “substantially less likely to develop cognitive impairment,” and MRI scans showed better preservation of brain structures involved in memory and learning.
Dr Leana Wen, interviewed for the piece, explains that walking is far more complex than it appears. It requires the brain to coordinate muscles and nerves while processing balance, vision, spatial awareness, and environmental cues — all at once.
Walking down a busy street means navigating uneven surfaces, monitoring traffic, adjusting pace, maintaining balance, and thinking about other aspects of life simultaneously. This choreography demands multiple brain regions working in harmony, which may explain why faster walking correlates with better cognitive health.
The Neurology study does not claim that fast walking causes better cognition. Instead, it shows an association. Super movers may differ from others in many ways: they may have been more physically active throughout life, may have fewer chronic conditions, healthier diets, genetic advantages, higher incomes, or stronger social support networks.
Any combination of these factors could contribute both to their exceptional mobility and their cognitive resilience. As Dr Wen notes, it’s also possible that people whose brains are ageing particularly well are simply better able to maintain a faster walking pace. What the research suggests, however, is that maintaining good physical function into one’s 80s may be a marker of healthy brain ageing.
The future prospects
This raises an encouraging question: can someone who isn’t a fast walker now become one later in life? While the Neurology study doesn’t address this directly, previous research shows that people can improve their physical fitness well into older age.
CNN highlights a study in which nearly half of adults aged 65 and older improved either their physical or cognitive function over a 12-year period. A sedentary person can begin with short, comfortable walks and gradually increase duration and frequency.
Someone who already walks regularly might add brief intervals of faster-paced walking or introduce hills to make the activity more challenging. The greatest benefits often occur when people move from little or no exercise to just a bit more.
Of course, not all changes in walking speed are benign. A gradual slowing can be part of normal ageing, but a noticeable or rapid decline — especially when accompanied by other symptoms — deserves attention.
Joint arthritis, back pain, muscle loss, medication side effects, neurological conditions, and changes in vision or balance can all affect gait. A substantial or unexplained decline in mobility should prompt a conversation with a healthcare provider.
Walking, however, is only one part of the broader picture of healthy ageing. Both the Neurology study and CNN’s expert commentary point to a constellation of habits that support cognitive and physical health.
The collective benefits
Aerobic activity — whether walking, cycling, swimming, or playing sports like pickleball or tennis — helps maintain cardiovascular fitness. Strength training becomes increasingly important with age, supporting mobility, independence, and metabolic health.
Balance training reduces fall risk, a major determinant of late-life wellbeing. Managing blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes protects the brain’s blood vessels. Eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and minimally processed foods supports vascular and cognitive health. Adequate sleep, social engagement, hobbies, and learning new skills all help keep the brain active.
Essentially, super movers reinforce a core truth: movement is medicine, and it is never too late to begin. Whether someone is 40, 60, or 80, the path toward better cognitive and physical health begins with small, sustainable steps.
