A summer of horror: What Europe and the US reveal about a planet in peril

While the 2026 Northern Hemisphere summer is still far from over, it’s already delivered a stark message: the climate crisis is no longer a distant threat but a lived reality reshaping daily life across Europe and the United States.

From record-shattering temperatures to rivers running dry, wildfires tearing through communities, and infrastructure pushed past breaking point, this season has exposed the fragility of systems built for a cooler world.

The European furnace

Western Europe has just endured its hottest first two months of summer ever recorded, according to the EU’s Copernicus climate service. Average temperatures for June and July reached 21.62°C, nearly 2.8°C above normal, surpassing the previous record set only four years ago.

Parts of Europe are now experiencing their fifth heatwave of the season, and the impacts have been devastating:

  • More than 25,000 heat-related deaths across Europe this year.
  • Record-setting wildfires burning over 1.23 million acres, mostly in Spain, France, and Italy.
  • Smoke travelling across borders, degrading air quality continent-wide.

Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, yet remains structurally unprepared for extreme heat due to older buildings and limited air conditioning.

Natural cooling collapses

Persistent drought has created a feedback loop: dry soils lose their ability to cool the air, intensifying heat extremes. Soil moisture levels in July were “exceptional to record deficits” in France, Spain, Germany, and the UK.

Major rivers — the Seine, Rhine, and Danube — have dropped to historic lows, threatening energy supplies and forcing nuclear reactors in Hungary and Romania to shut down due to insufficient cooling water.

Across the Atlantic, July 2026 was the hottest month ever recorded in the United States, according to NOAA’s climate data . Temperature records in the U.S. date back to 1895 — and this July surpassed them all.

Relentless Extremes

The Lower 48 states saw temperatures 3.3°F above the 20th-century average, beating previous records from 1936 and 2012. More than 600 monthly heat records were broken across the country, compared with fewer than 50 cold records — a pattern NOAA directly links to human-caused climate change.

A series of heat domes — atmospheric lids trapping hot air — parked over different regions throughout the month, intensifying heat from the East Coast to the Southwest.

Wildfires and water crises

The US mirrored Europe’s fire emergency:

  • Large wildfires burned across the Pacific Northwest and Canada.
  • A complex of three fires destroyed hundreds of homes in Spokane, Washington.
  • Lake Mead, the nation’s largest reservoir, hit a record low, threatening water supplies for 20 million people.

Cities from Denver to Miami recorded their warmest Julys ever, with rapid warming trends since 1970 reshaping summer norms.

A shared story

Both continents are being hit by the combined force of:

  • A rapidly intensifying El Niño event, raising global sea and air temperatures (Europe’s “Super El Niño” is specifically noted).
  • Long-term warming driven by fossil fuel emissions, making heatwaves more intense, longer-lasting, and more frequent.

The result: a synchronised pattern of extreme heat, drought, wildfire outbreaks, and infrastructure stress across the Northern Hemisphere, which results in much of the following:

1. Food Systems Under Pressure: Extreme heat and drought threaten crop yields, water availability, and soil health — the foundations of whole-food, plant-based nutrition. Europe’s collapsing soil moisture and shrinking rivers foreshadow global agricultural instability.

2. Poor Air Quality and Health: Wildfire smoke drifting across continents affects respiratory health, cardiovascular risk, and outdoor activity — all central to wellbeing.

3. Water Scarcity: From the Danube to Lake Mead, water systems are buckling. This affects everything from home cooking to food production to community resilience.

4. Climate Migration and Social Stability: Wildfires displacing hundreds of thousands in Europe signal a future where climate-driven movement becomes increasingly common.

5. The Need for Local and Global Action: Whether you’re in Auckland, Melbourne, California, or Paris, the message is the same: climate resilience must be built into homes, cities, food systems, and daily habits.

What we can do

What we can do about all this, both individually and collectively, begins with the choices we make every day. Eating for the climate remains one of the most powerful personal actions available to us; whole‑food, plant‑based diets reduce emissions, conserve water, and ease pressure on the land.

At the same time, supporting regenerative agriculture helps restore the planet’s natural cooling systems. Europe’s unfolding soil crisis is a stark reminder of what happens when those systems fail.

Our cities, too, need care. Championing urban cooling through green roofs, shade trees, reflective surfaces, and community cooling centres is no longer optional — these interventions save lives. Reducing our dependence on fossil fuels is equally urgent. Every fraction of a degree of warming we avoid now will lessen the severity of the summers to come.

And through all of this, we must stay connected. Extreme heat isolates people, but strong community networks — checking on neighbours, sharing resources, supporting the vulnerable — keep us resilient.

This summer is not an anomaly; it is a preview. Europe’s record‑breaking heatwaves and the United States’ hottest month ever recorded are chapters of the same global story, one shaped by rising emissions, stressed ecosystems, and a climate system pushed beyond stability. Yet it is also a story we still have the power to influence.
