From blank moments to beautiful rituals: The heart behind ArtEscape.art

by Catherine Barclay

If you’ve ever been confronted by a blank moment, or an empty space on a weekend, and felt that tug to do or create something special, then you already understand the heartbeat behind our new venture ArtEscape.art. It’s a paint-by-numbers store, but it wasn’t created to just sell kits.

I think of it as a ‘doorway back to self’, and I’m hoping that’s what you’ll discover there too. I loved art as a kid but never had the time to fully get into it. I was shocked when I completed my first numbers canvas. It was so captivating.

In a world that feels increasingly fast, loud, and demanding, many of us have forgotten what it feels like to slow down. We’ve forgotten the pleasure of being absorbed in something simple, tactile, and quietly joyful. We’ve forgotten how nourishing it is to make something with our hands, without pressure, without perfection, without needing to “perform” for anyone.

And that’s exactly where ArtEscape began.

A creative pause in a busy world

ArtEscape.art was born from the same philosophy that shaped WholeFoodLiving.life: the belief that wellbeing isn’t a single action — it’s a lifestyle of small, meaningful rituals. Just as whole‑food cooking invites us to slow down, reconnect with ingredients, and honour our bodies, painting invites us to slow down, reconnect with colour, and our visual surroundings.

Both are forms of nourishment. Both are forms of meditation.

Both are ways of reclaiming time in a world that constantly tries to take it from us.

Peter and I created ArtEscape because we saw how many people craved a gentle, accessible way to unwind. Not another app. Not another productivity hack. Not another screen. Something real. Something you can touch. Something that pulls you into the present moment and keeps you there long enough to breathe.

The science of slowing down

At WholeFoodLiving.life, we often talk about the science of nourishment — how whole foods support metabolic health, reduce inflammation, and help us feel grounded and energised. But there’s another kind of nourishment we don’t talk about enough: creative nourishment.

Studies show that engaging in low‑pressure creative activities:

  • lowers cortisol
  • improves mood
  • supports cognitive flexibility
  • reduces rumination
  • increases feelings of accomplishment and self‑trust

Paint‑by‑numbers sits in a sweet spot: structured enough to be calming, creative enough to be expressive. It’s the perfect antidote to decision fatigue. You don’t have to be “good at art.” You don’t have to know where to start. You simply follow the colours, one small section at a time, and let your mind settle.

It’s mindfulness disguised as play.

But why paint‑by‑numbers?

We chose paint‑by‑numbers intentionally — not as a nostalgic throwback, but as a wellbeing tool.

1. It’s accessible. Anyone can paint. You don’t need training, talent, or confidence. You just need curiosity.

2. It’s structured. The numbered sections create a gentle rhythm. You don’t have to make big creative decisions. You simply follow the flow.

3. It’s absorbing. The act of filling in shapes pulls you into a state of “flow,” where time softens, and your nervous system unwinds.

4. It’s screen‑free. In a digital world, analogue creativity feels like a deep exhale.

5. It creates beauty. You finish with something you’re proud of — a reminder that you are capable of creating joy with your own hands.

The New Zealand connection

Kiwi’s understand the value of slowing down. We understand the importance of nature, community, and creativity. ArtEscape is our way of bottling that feeling and sharing it with others, both here and all around the world. And we love food … although sometimes a little too much and for all the wrong reasons!

WholeFoodLiving has always been about more than recipes. It’s about reclaiming the rituals that make us feel human — cooking slowly, eating mindfully, sharing food with people we love, and choosing habits that support long‑term wellbeing.

ArtEscape.art is an extension of that same philosophy.

Just as chopping vegetables can be meditative, painting can be restorative. Just as simmering a pot of soup can anchor you, filling in a patch of colour can soothe you. Just as whole‑food living is about nourishment, paint‑by‑numbers is about presence.

Both ask you to slow down.

Both ask you to pay attention.

Both ask you to choose yourself.

Creative rituals for every season

We created ArtEscape for people who:

  • feel overwhelmed and need a gentle way to unwind
  • want a screen‑free hobby that feels grounding
  • crave creativity but don’t know where to start
  • want to reconnect with their inner child
  • need a calming ritual at the end of the day
  • want to decorate their home with something meaningful
  • love the idea of creating but feel intimidated by blank canvases

Painting is a ritual you can return to again and again — on quiet mornings, rainy afternoons, or evenings when your brain feels too full. It’s a way of saying, “I deserve this moment.”

A bridge between worlds

WholeFoodLiving.life nourishes the body. ArtEscape.art nourishes the mind. Together, they form a holistic wellbeing philosophy: slow living as a lifestyle, not a luxury.

We believe wellbeing should feel warm, welcoming, and achievable. Not clinical. Not overwhelming. Not perfect. Just human.

That’s why our paint‑by‑numbers kits are designed to feel like an invitation — an invitation to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the parts of yourself that get lost in the rush of everyday life.

Here’s what happens

When you sit down with a paint‑by‑numbers kit, something subtle happens. Your shoulders drop. Your breathing slows. Your thoughts soften. You stop worrying about tomorrow and start noticing the colour in front of you.

It’s a small act with a big impact. And that’s the heart of ArtEscape.art: small acts of creativity that gently reshape your wellbeing.

We believe everyone deserves a place to escape — not by running away from life, but by returning to themselves. A place where creativity feels safe, simple, and joyful. A place where wellbeing isn’t a chore, but a pleasure.

Just like WholeFoodLiving.life, ArtEscape is about choosing rituals that nourish you. It’s about slowing down. It’s about making space for beauty. It’s about remembering that you are allowed to rest, create, and breathe.

It happens one brushstroke at a time.
