A chilling warning from highly respected plant-based medical expert Dr John A McDougall drew audible gasps from attendees at the Veg and Vines conference in Gisborne yesterday.
Following a rousing one hour delivery live on Skype, the 73 year-old advocate caused an almost stunned silence when he revealed his primary motivation for actively continuing his nearly 50 year fight for plant-based nutrition solutions to lifestyle illnesses.
It came during a Q & A session afterwards when he urged doctors attending the conference to “get out and get on with it” because “there is nothing wrong with the science.”
He said the world could end global warming issues ‘almost in an instant’ if Governments introduced plant-based medicine to their health care systems.
But, as far as the planet was concerned, the time for making this change was short.
“We don’t have time to discuss it,” he said.
“I’m doing it now because my grand children have no future. In 10 to 100 years’ time it will all be gone. They have no future.”
It was a sobering reflection that almost exactly mirrored what happened one continent away at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, at nearly the same time.
There, David Attenborough, was being questioned by Al Gore about what heads of states should do when talking to unconvinced world leaders regarding climate change.
His unequivocal message was the same.
“Think of your children and your children’s children,” Attenborough said.
“Could you look them in the eye and say ‘l knew what could be done to stop the degradation of the environment and of the climate but it was too difficult and rather boring and, I failed to do it – and you, are now going to take the consequences.”
Sitting thousands of miles away in a venue outside Gisborne, conference attendees might be forgiven for wondering what all that really had to do with whole food plant-based nutrition if it wasn’t for the fact that their own Prime Minister was put on the spot by same person.
She said: “You don’t have to cede power by acting on climate change. There’s nothing to fear about your individual political status. This is about being on the right side of history so that you don’t look back on time and say that you were on the wrong side of the argument when the world was crying out for a solution. It’s as simple as that.”
If Jacida Adern really believes this then she must surely now be ready to accept the McDougall challenge.
Will she do it, or will it be nothing more than another lofty statement on a world stage?
